Bangor Neon was started back in 1948 by Bob Treworgy and Joe Willette. The two had grown up together in the Bangor area and had both served in World War II.
After their service had ended, Bob went to school at the Maine School of Commerce. He then took a job working for Tidewater Oil, while Joe used his GI Bill to train as a neon tube bender.
With the help of Bob's father Laurence, the two pooled their resources and set up shop in Laurence's garage under the name of Animated Neon Signs. Bob was the administrative head of the business, while Joe maintained more of the fabrication.
In 1951, the owners moved into a new location and bought their first truck. They fashioned a boom from wood and metal piping after seeing a similar idea put into work.
In 1966 Bob and Joe parted ways, leaving Bob the sole owner of the business. In 1971 Bangor Neon was relocated to it's current facility on Hammond St. in Bangor. A lot has changed since the days of makeshift boom trucks and hand drawn sketches, but our commitment to excellent service and high quality products remains the same.
Sadly, we lost Bob Treworgy in 2007. He was a dedicated husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather who took a dream with small beginnings, and turned it into a full-service, multi-faceted business. He will be missed.
Grace Treworgy, Bob's wife of 63 years, still runs the business and is very much an active presence in all things related to it.
